How It Works

About the Hourly to Salary Calculator

Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax

Pre-tax is what you invoice before any tax deductions. Post-tax is your actual take-home after federal, state, and self-employment taxes. For 1099 contractors, the gap is typically larger than W-2 because you pay the full 15.3% SE tax.

2026 IRS Tax Brackets

This calculator uses the latest 2026 federal tax brackets (10%–37%) for all filing statuses. SE tax applies at 15.3% on net income up to $168,600, then 2.9% Medicare only above that threshold.

FAQ

Hourly to Salary FAQs

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by the number of weeks you work per year. For 1099 contractors, remember to account for self-employment tax (15.3%) and federal/state income tax to get your true post-tax income.

Pre-tax salary is your gross annual income before any taxes are withheld. Post-tax salary is what remains after federal income tax, state income tax, and self-employment tax (FICA/SE) are deducted. For W-2 employees, payroll taxes are split with the employer; for 1099 contractors, you pay the full 15.3% self-employment tax.

Self-employment tax is 15.3% on 92.35% of your net self-employment income (after expenses), up to $168,600 in 2026. This covers Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%). Above the threshold, only the 2.9% Medicare portion continues.

This calculator is designed for 1099 contractors and self-employed workers. If you are a W-2 employee, use our standard salary calculator. The key difference is that 1099 workers pay both the employer and employee portions of FICA through the self-employment tax.

Multiply your expected annual tax by the safe harbor percentage (90% of current year or 100-110% of prior year), then divide by 4. Use our Quarterly Estimated Tax Calculator for a more precise breakdown.
