Benchmark Scorecard FAQs
It scores four core metrics — gross margin, labor %, rent/occupancy %, and net % — against general peer ranges for your business type. Green means at or above peer benchmark, yellow means caution, red means well below. The percentage is your share of points earned.
They are general industry ranges by business type, retrieved 2026-08-13, and documented in our type-specific opening and diagnosis guides (restaurant, cafe, retail, fitness, convenience, auto repair, bakery, bar, salon, e-commerce). They are rules of thumb, not a guarantee.
Net % is the bottom line, but labor % and rent % are the two you actually control. A store can have a strong gross margin and still score poorly if labor or rent drift above peer bands — that is where the scorecard earns its keep.
Pick the closest match. The ranges are directional; a coffee shop and a bakery share similar labor and COGS bands, for example. Use the score as a conversation starter with your accountant, not a verdict.
